I Have Seen A Miracle with
My Own Eyes
from Carole Nelson, Randal
Walti's sister
Wed, 02 Feb 2000
So many of you have
been involved in sustaining me as I
mustered up as much courage as possible for my dear brother Randal (to be strong for him
and Judi) and his impending deep brain surgery (Parkinson's) which took place last
Wednesday, January 26th. I just didn't know if I was going to make it, and I wasn't even
the one having the surgery. I believe the fact that he would not have anesthetic just
overwhelmed me.
I was so shocked by the procedure that he would go through that I
almost forgot the reason he was having it done. The tremor and his slurring of speech were
ruining his life. At the young age of 60, his future was debilitating and bleak. He did
have his mental sharpness thought. He wanted to work, and more importantly, he wanted to
disciple for Christ.
At 5:00 a.m., Burrows Institute & Neurology in Phoenix began his
surgery with a team of doctors that had done this procedure only 18 times before. The
preparation took from 5-9:30 a.m. at which time the surgery would begin.
By noon, I am sitting in the waiting room and the phone rings. It's
Randy's nurse in surgery, telling me that Randy wanted me to that he was doing fine and it
would still be a couple of hours. That is my first sign of relief. I smothered my little
tears whispering and sending praises upward to the Lord every few minutes! At 2:00 p.m.,
they wheeled my brother out. He was half sitting in his bed, eyes open, peacefully
smiling, and he talked to us when we saw him. He knew our names. I could not hold back my
joyful tears. My brother, Fred II, came to my rescue and held me. I gave thanks to the
Lord and couldn't believe what I saw. I just couldn't believe it!
On Friday, he was very alert, bright eyes, smiling, happy, though still
with a tremor. I couldn't believe my brother was ALIVE even though he had a swollen
forehead. He almost ordered Judi, his wife, to plug in his laptop. This was too much for
me. I couldn't believe him and his behavior two days following brain surgery. Now I could
go home and concentrate maybe for the first time in 3-4 months since hearing that Randy
had decided to have this procedure done.
Well my dear friends, my brother called me yesterday [Tuesday 2/1/00]
after arriving home Monday night. He told me, "It's a miracle." He didn't have
to take any medicine. He had a pacemaker-like unit in his collarbone area which he uses to
switch off the tremor. Just like that! He used to take maybe 30 pills a day (you can
imagine what side effects he experienced). He spoke to me CLEARLY without any slurring of
his words. I could understand every word he said. I could not believe this! He just kept
saying, "It is a MIRACLE, Sis!"
All my love to you and just remember the Lord does work in very mysterious ways, and more
importantly, believe in miracles. I just saw one performed I was part of it! Never give up
hope, ever, ever, and ever.
Oh the power of prayer moves mountains.
